The Chilcotin is a magical combination of biological and geographical
factors, from the three mountain ranges; the Itcha and Ilgachuz and
Rainbow mountains to the glacier fed Chilco Lake. Also featuring the
breathtaking Farewell Canyon, the northernmost point of the Great
American Desert.
You enter the Chilcotin on a well-maintained highway linking Bella
Coola to Williams Lake. This highway is known as the Freedom Highway,
built in 1953 to allow isolated residents a way to travel, many stories
have been written about the adventures of the "old" road into Williams
Lake. West Chilcotin boasts 8000 crystal-clear lakes and rivers,
world famous for fishing, hiking, rafting, and wildlife viewing.
